Chicago Crossing

Three lessons on the Windy City as a Gilded Age American Crossroads Community

Using Gilded Age Chicago as a case study, this session at the 2010 NCHE Conference featured 3 lessons exploring the turmoil and dislocations brought about by the birth of modern America. Three Teaching American History grant-teachers modeled classroom lessons emphasizing changes in one place over time.

Examining Chicago as a hub city connecting East and West, these lessons explore the transformative impact of technology and railroads as an accelerating force in society, the clash between capital and labor in the industrial economy, and the cultural transformation from Victorian city to the modern skyline. These lessons depict Chicago at a crossroads wrestling to understand what "progress" means.
